Too Fat To Fly?

Recently the Federal Government; among other things, has been dictating ones diet by forcing restaurants to provide low calorie meals and making them publish the calories on their menu. But airlines are also dictating how large one can be, by providing us with these tiny little children’s seats. All in the name of “Safety”

Kevin Smith, a well known Hollywood actor, comic, producer, and director was told by a Southwest Airlines flight attendant that he was just too fat to fly. The fact that he did fit into the airline seat didn’t seem to matter. Safety issue? What safety Issue? Kevin, needless to say, is not pleased.

I can relate to this story in the since that in another life, I worked for a major airline. Back then we required that ‘large persons’, now called ‘persons of size’, (as if us skinny people don’t have any dimensions at all,) were required to fly first class where the seats were about a third larger ‘or’ they would have to purchase two coach seats. Except for the first class seats which are now missing on most flights, the rules haven’t changed much.

If one has ever entered a restaurant or any public building, one has encountered wheel chair access. It begins already in the parking lot where the rest of us must park up to 100 yards away even though there are a dozen available blue spots right next to the building.

Trust me, the business owners don’t necessarily provide all these conveniences out of their heartfelt concern for the disabled. It is the government regulatory agencies that will shut down the business of they do not provide these amenities for the ambulatorally challenged.

So why don’t the airlines have to provide larger seats for the “persons of size”, as they so tactfully and tastefully and political correctly refer to fat people?

Because “Fat People” --- I’m sorry, “persons of size” don’t have a highly paid lobbyist, ‘that’s why’…
